Rabbi Elliot Skiddell has served as Rabbi of Reconstructionist Congregation Beth Emeth since August 2006 and is excited to be part of the next stage of our Central Synagogue - Beth Emeth journey. As of July 20016, he oversees all aspects of education for the entire Central Syngogue - Beth Emeth community, including the Jewish Experience education program and the Long Island Jewish Learning Network, our adult education program.
In partnership with Rabbi Gruber, Rabbi Skiddell has introduced many innovations and creative ideas to education programs and religious services for our collective community. Poetry selected to supplement the traditional prayers on Friday nights add a deeper spiritual level to the wonder and appreciation we experience as a community. Saturday mornings are filled with interesting insights and discussions of the Torah readings. Rabbi Skiddell’s popular Tuesday morning “Brunch and Learn” programs have explored varied topics such as “We Are What We Eat”, “Jewish Stories on the Page and on the Screen”, “Hebrew Poetry from the Bible to Today”, and Bible texts.
A graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Rabbi Skiddell also received a BA in Philosophy and Religion from the University of Massachusetts and an MA in Religion from Temple University. In 2005 he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
Rabbi Skiddell and his family lived in Israel for fourteen years where he was assistant director of the seminar center of the Galilee Education Foundation and also served as TZAHAR [Tzefat. Hatzor, Rosh Pina] Region Director for the Jewish Agency for Israel. He was honored as the outstanding employee of the Jewish Agency in 2004. Before moving to Israel he served as Rabbi of Ramat Shalom Synagogue in Plantation, Florida for ten years and as Assistant Rabbi of Har Zion Temple, Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, for two years.
