Social Action

Our Congregation provides its members with many opportunities for social action. Our programs benefit women's and teen shelters, foster children and homeless veterans, the homebound and the hungry. By reaching out to people in need, we not only help to repair the world, but also strengthen our Jewish identity and provide an important example of our values for our children.

The goal of Central - Beth Emeth Social Action Committee is tikkun olam, repairing the world.  The committe works towards this goal through a balance of gemilut hasadim (loving kindness), providing direct help to those in need, tzedakah (justice), advocacy to get to the roots of poverty and injustice, and Talmud/Torah (study and education) guided by the principles and values of Progressive Judaism.

The Social Action Committee has implemented and participated in a wide range of projects:

  • Conduct regular food and clothing drives to benefit local food organizations such as the Harry Chapin Food Bank, the INN and New Ground
  • Auctioned hand-crafted canvas totes to benefit "Nothing but Nets," an organization that fights malaria through the purchase of mosquito nets.
  • Planting flowers at senior centers
  • Year-long project with Bethany House, a shelter for women and children who are homeless
  • Fundraiser to benefit Women of the Wall
  • Participate annually Reform Jewish Voice of New York State's advocacy day in Albany
  • Advocated on issues such as raising the minimum wage and the Women's Equality Act, and have designed and delivered advocacy training for other congregations.
  • Hosted Gwen O'Shea of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island to talk about health care reform and the Affordable Care Act
  • Hosted a healthy food pot luck dinner and nutritionist who spoke to congregants about nutrition and healthy foods
  • Conduct annual Passover project to prepare baskets of Passover goods for JASA residents
