Topic: “Traduttore, traditore:
Is the translator a traitor to the text or an interpreter of it? The newest translation of the Bible, a 30 year labor of love and scholarship by Professor Robert Alter, joins a long list of Bible translations going back to the Septuagint [Greek] and the venerable King James and continuing through various Jewish Publication Society publications.
We will compare translations of some of the most well known passages from the Bible and discuss why translations are necessary, their “loyalty” to the original – or deviation from it – and why we might want a continuing tradition of translating the Bible anew every generation.
