Jacob Agar

Jacob Agar is Central Synagogue – Beth Emeth’s Cantor and Music Leader. He is excited to be a part of creating a beautiful musical culture at our synagogue. Jacob is a lyric tenor and 5th year cantorial student at the H.L Miller Cantorial School at Jewish Theological Seminary of New York. Previously he studied opera and linguistics at the music conservatory at SUNY Purchase College. Following conservatory, he sang with several opera companies in Manhattan and New Jersey, such as Amore Opera, Garden State Opera, DiCapo Opera, Utopia Opera, and Purchase College Opera, and has worked with a wide variety of conductors. Jacob also served as a piano teacher at the Rivertown School of Music, and taught voice privately to children and adults.

Jacob was inspired to become a cantor by his love for Judaism, Jewish music, and his interest in using music for healing and pastoral care. His goal is to use music to elevate people spiritually and to help them find comfort and solace at synagogue.

Jacob is also a composer and writes mostly to Jewish liturgical texts. His works have been performed at JTS and a variety of synagogues in services and concerts. As a cantor, Jacob is a recipient of the Richard Briskin Cantorial Award. He is also an avid recitalist and has performed all over the east coast.

In his free time, Jacob loves biking and yoga, as well as traveling. Feel free to contact at cantor@centralsy.org.
